Shopify tracks a variant's quantity, but it has no field for a lot code or an expiry date, so the batch a unit belongs to exists only on the carton or in a spreadsheet. The stock that expires is therefore invisible until someone walks the shelf — and when a supplier flags a bad batch, working out which units are affected means reading cartons. BatchGuard records the lot against the variant, so expiring stock shows up while there is still time to discount it, and a recall is a search rather than a stock-take.
The FEFO view orders your lots by expiry date so the batch closest to its date goes out first, and per-location pull lists tell each site what to take off its own shelf. When a batch does go bad, writing it off is explicit and per-lot: the units come out of available stock, capped so it never drops below zero, with the inventory value recorded for your books and an undo if you slip.
BatchGuard is lot-level only: it does not auto-deduct stock as orders ship, does not forecast demand, and does not manage purchase orders. A recall report covers inventory, not customers — it tells you which stock is affected, not who bought it. It is a tool, not legal or regulatory advice. The app reads your products and inventory and writes only what you turn on: tagging expiring products, optionally setting fully expired ones to draft, and the write-offs you perform yourself. It requests no customer or order data, so it stores no names, emails or addresses.

Does adding a lot change my inventory?
Only if you tick the add-to-stock option. Otherwise lots are tracking records beside your existing stock.
Where does the write-off value come from?
From the cost per item on the variant in Shopify. Set costs on your variants to get accurate values.
Why does BatchGuard need my locations?
To name them on a pull list and split it per warehouse. Shopify tracks stock per location, not per batch, so the app records the location you give each lot rather than guessing.
Does the app read orders or customers?
No. It uses product, inventory and location data only.
Does BatchGuard store my certificates?
No. A certificate of analysis is a link to wherever you already keep the file.

What happens to my data when I uninstall?
